Best Time to Visit Sedona

March 10, 2026 · 6 min read

Sedona is stunning year-round — but depending on what you're looking for, some months are better than others. Whether you want perfect hiking weather, smaller crowds, lower prices, or wildflower blooms, this month-by-month guide will help you pick the ideal time for your trip.

The Quick Answer

Best overall: March–May and September–November. These shoulder seasons offer the best mix of comfortable weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices.

Best for budget travelers: December–February (excluding holidays). You'll find the lowest accommodation rates and the fewest crowds.

Best for hiking: October and November. Cool, dry days with clear skies make these the premier months for hitting the trails.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is arguably the most popular time to visit Sedona — and for good reason. Daytime temperatures are warm but not scorching, wildflowers paint the desert in vibrant colors, and the red rocks seem to glow under clear blue skies.

March kicks off the season with highs in the low 70s. This is peak wildflower season if winter rains have been generous. Expect moderate crowds, especially over spring break weeks.

April is considered by many locals to be the single best month. Temps are perfect for hiking (mid-70s), the landscape is green and blooming, and the crowds haven't yet reached summer levels.

May starts to warm up (highs approaching 90°F by late May), but mornings and evenings remain pleasant. It's a great time for early-morning hikes and sunset views from your deck.

Summer (June – August)

Avg High95–100°F

Rating★★★☆☆

Summer in Sedona is hot — but at 4,350 feet elevation, it's significantly cooler than Phoenix (often 10–15°F lower). Many Phoenix residents escape to Sedona on summer weekends.

The monsoon season typically arrives in July and August, bringing dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that cool things down and create spectacular cloud formations over the red rocks. These storms are usually brief but intense — and the post-storm light is a photographer's dream.

Pro tip: Plan your outdoor activities for early morning (before 10am) and enjoy the pool, hot tub, or indoor amenities during the hottest afternoon hours. Sedona's restaurants and galleries are perfect for midday exploration when the sun is intense.

Fall (September – November)

Avg High75–90°F
CrowdsModerate
PricesModerate–Peak
Rating★★★★★

Fall rivals spring as the best time to visit. The summer heat fades, the monsoon moisture adds a lush green to the landscape, and the fall foliage along Oak Creek Canyon is nothing short of spectacular.

September is still warm (80s–90s) but the monsoon storms taper off, leaving crystalline skies. This is when locals say the hiking is best — trails are uncrowded and the light is golden.

October is the sweet spot. Daytime highs settle into the comfortable 70s–80s, and the cottonwoods along Oak Creek Canyon turn brilliant gold and orange. The scenic drive from Sedona to Flagstaff through the canyon is a must.

November brings cooler temps (60s–70s daytime, 30s–40s overnight) and the smallest crowds of the fall season. It's perfect for hikers who prefer crisp air and solitude on the trails.

Winter (December – February)

Avg High55–65°F
CrowdsLow
PricesLow–Moderate
Rating★★★★☆

Winter is Sedona's hidden gem. The crowds thin out dramatically (except around Christmas and New Year's), accommodation prices drop, and the red rocks dusted with snow create a scene that rivals any national park.

Daytime temperatures are cool but pleasant — perfect for hiking in layers. Snow is possible but rarely stays more than a day or two in town (though the surrounding higher elevations hold it longer). When it does snow, the contrast of white against red rock is unforgettable.

December brings holiday events including the Sedona Northern Lights festival and the Tlaquepaque holiday celebrations. If you visit between Christmas and New Year's, expect higher prices and more visitors — but the festive atmosphere is worth it.

January and February are the quietest months. You'll have trails nearly to yourself, restaurants won't need reservations, and you'll find the best deals on vacation rentals. The trade-off is cooler temps (30s–40s overnight) and occasional rain.

Our Recommendation

If we had to pick one month, we'd say October. The weather is ideal, the fall colors along Oak Creek Canyon are breathtaking, the trails are in perfect condition, and the crowds are manageable. Book early though — October weekends fill up fast.

For budget-conscious travelers, January or February offer incredible value. You'll get the same stunning red rocks, far fewer people, and significantly lower prices on vacation rentals.

No matter when you visit, Sedona delivers. The red rocks are magnificent in every season, and there's always something to do — from hiking and wine tasting to spa days and stargazing.
