Choose Scottsdale If…

Golf Is a Priority

You Love Resort-Style Spa Days

World-class spas like The Phoenician, Sanctuary on Camelback, and CIVANA offer everything from hot-stone treatments to desert-mud wraps. Scottsdale's spa scene is among the best in the country.

Nightlife & Bar-Hopping Appeal to You

Old Town Scottsdale is packed with rooftop lounges, craft cocktail bars, and lively clubs. If your ideal evening involves live music and a late-night taco run, Scottsdale delivers where Sedona does not.

Shopping & Fine Dining Matter

Scottsdale Fashion Square is one of the largest malls in the Southwest, and the Scottsdale Arts District offers galleries and boutiques. The dining scene ranges from celebrity chef restaurants to acclaimed Mexican and Japanese cuisine.

You Want Convenience to Phoenix Airport

Scottsdale is just 15 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor, making it the easier choice for short weekend getaways or business trips that leave limited time for a long drive.

Why Not Both?

Here's the best-kept secret about an Arizona vacation: you don't have to choose. Sedona and Scottsdale are roughly two hours apart by car, and combining both into a single trip gives you the full spectrum of what Arizona offers.

A popular itinerary is three nights in Sedona followed by two nights in Scottsdale. Start your trip immersed in red rock hikes, vortex energy, and starry nights. Then transition to Scottsdale for spa treatments, a round of golf, and a night out in Old Town before your flight home.

Check out our Sedona itineraries for day-by-day plans that make the most of your time in the red rocks before heading south.

Getting There

Both destinations are reached through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), one of the busiest airports in the Southwest with direct flights from most major U.S. cities.

  • Phoenix to Scottsdale: 15 minutes east via Loop 101. Rideshare or rental car — no freeway drama.
  • Phoenix to Sedona: 2 hours north via I-17 to Highway 179. The last 30 minutes take you through the Village of Oak Creek with jaw-dropping red rock views.
  • Scenic route option: Take Highway 89A through Oak Creek Canyon for a winding, forested drive with creek crossings and canyon walls. Add about 30 minutes, but it is one of Arizona's most beautiful roads.

There is no commercial airport in Sedona, so a rental car is essential. The good news: the drive itself is part of the experience.
